Thai Authorities See Red Over Penis-Whitening Craze

BANGKOK: Thai authorities are attempting to put the brakes on a craze sweeping the country, where a growing number of men are undergoing laser treatment to whiten the skin tone of their penises.

Deputy director-general of the Health Service Support Department Dr Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn has warned that the treatment could lead to adverse health effects.

“The skin of the private parts is sensitive. Such laser services may cause irritation, allergies and inflammation.

“What if your skin becomes spotted?” he was quoted by local media as saying on Friday.

He said that he has no knowledge of any such treatment being offered outside of the country.

Dr Keeratihuttayakorn added that he will ask the country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to check on the equipment used in the laser treatment and whether they have been approved by authorities.

A hospital here which offers the treatment, which costs about US$650 for five sessions, said it treats about 100 men a month.
