NEW DELHI: One person was killed and 12 others injured in a stampede during a free medicine distribution event in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Police said the incident took place during the distribution of Fish Prasadam medicine, an annual event attracting thousands of asthma patients from different parts of the country to Rajendranagar.

The stampede occurred when hundreds of people, who waited for hours outside a sports complex, surged forward as police opened the main entrance gate in the morning.

Several elderly persons suffering from asthma sustained injuries during the incident.
