MOSCOW: Russia's ruling United Russia party elected Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev as its new leader on Saturday, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

According to the news agency, former leader of the United Russia and incumbent President Vladimir Putin had led the party from 2008 to 2012, but he never formally joined the party.
