Darth Vader and Son: the awesome father Vader

Darth Vader and Son

What would happen if Darth Vader played an active role in raising (SPOILER!) his son, Luke Skywalker? Apparently some pretty adorable situations would arise, as shown in Darth Vader and Son, an upcoming Star Wars children's book by Jeffrey Brown. Get a peek inside the title right here, courtesy Chronicle Books.

No bones about it, this is one hell of a charming book. Vader is a surprisingly patient parent who plays off Luke's childish wonder really well. Every page — Darth Vader and Son is a series of one-off vignettes — is steeped in fan service, whether it's a cameo in some form by the characters we all know and love, or a clever and subtle joke that pokes fun at the familiar Star Wars universe.

Impressive Real-Life (Human) Disney Princesses

This is a small series of photographs by Ryan Astemendi of Disney Princesses in real life. As amazing and accurate as they all are, I couldn't help but notice there was something missing. "Ariel?" Bingo.

Chinese Mourners Honor the Dead with Paper iPhones and iPads

The ancient traditions and contemporary customs of Asia continue to baffle Westerners, particularly when it comes to technology. Such is the case with China, where mourners are actually honoring their dead with paper iPads and iPhones.

The paper replicas are for the Chinese Qingming festival, or Tomb Sweeping Day, during which families and friends leave symbolic offerings at the grave sites of their loved ones. The offerings vary widely, but in recent times the prized Apple touchscreen devices have become an acceptable form of tribute to those in the afterlife. The paper iPad can cost as little as $3, an easy way to bestow what may have been an aspirational gift upon someone who never had the chance to own the latest gadget during their lifetime.

Panasonic Lumix GF5 looks identical to its predecessor, offers similar specs for $100 more (hands-on)

It's been a bumpy ride for Panasonic's GF line of Micro Four Thirds cameras. The GF1, an excellent mirrorless camera for its time, was soon replaced with a less-capable entry level model, the GF2. Then another, the GF3. And now, it's time to say hello to the GF5 (perhaps 4's the new 13?). For better or worse, the GF3 won't be going away -- it'll sit tight at its new $500 price point (with a 14-42mm kit lens), ready to confuse consumers looking to purchase its nearly identical, yet $100 pricier, pseudo-replacement. Both cameras come equipped with 12.1-megapixel Live MOS sensors, though the newer model adds a "High Picture Quality" distinction -- it's been dubbed a 12.1-megapixel "High Picture Quality" Live MOS sensor. So, naturally, we're going to expect some pretty incredible images. Panasonic has also added an ISO 12,800 "extended" mode (the GF3 topped out at a native ISO 6400). There has been a jump in the video department, with 1080/30p MP4 recording joining the 720p mix. Burst mode capabilities have seen an increase as well, from 3.8 frames-per-second to... 4. Finally, it's slightly larger, due to a more substantial (and more comfortable) grip, though battery life has dropped from 340 shots to 320, likely due to a new processing technique aimed at further reducing noise in low-light captures.

Japan's Evangelion smartphone has slickest Android interface ever

Sharp's Evangelion Edition

Most Android users are either on Froyo, Gingerbread or have upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich. This Japanese smartphone made by Sharp looks nothing like the Android you're accustomed to. Hands-down, this Neon Genesis Evangelion phone has the coolest custom skin for any smartphone we've ever seen.

Sharp's SH-06D smartphone is a collab effort between Japan's NTT DoCoMo and Evangelion for an upcoming movie. The SH-06D's got a nice large 4.5-inch (1280x720) screen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor and runs Android 2.3 skinned to look like it's a console from the cockpit of some mech.

Before iPhones and Androids, Japan had the most advanced cellphones ever created. From having TV tuners, cameras with monster megapixels to large screens, Japan's "keitai" (cellphone) were every sci-fi geek's dreams. The SH-06D is proof Japan still knows a thing or two about pooping out cool gadgets.

Using it might be not be as functional and easy on the eyes as iOS or a stock build of Android is, but if you can train yourself to read those crazy Tokyoflash watches, a few days with the SH-06D be a cakewalk.

This smartphone looks to be a Japan-exclusive. What a bummer.
