andre_villa-_boasNEW YORK:  Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas (pic) was delighted with the response of his players to turn around a 1-0 deficit against New York Red Bulls in a friendly this morning to win 2-1.

Spurs fell behind in the eighth minute at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey when Kenny Cooper slotted home from the penalty spot.

But the visitors from London,  dominated from there, forced a number of fine saves from Red Bulls goalkeeper Bill Gaudette and eventually broke through just before the hour, when Gareth Bale rose majestically to head home Gylfi Sigurdsson’s corner.

Sigurdsson then went one better five minutes later, curling a lovely effort into the top corner from 16 meters.  There was no coming back for the hard-working MLS side after that.

“It was good and that’s mainly because of the response in the second half,” Villas-Boas told Spurs' website. .

“We were a bit spread out on the pitch in the first half and they were playing in-between us.

“We came back very strong and managed to get the win that everyone deserved.

"When you go into the dressing room 1-0 down and you are able to turn it around, showing strong character, that is always positive, because of the players’ mentality and determination to get the result. That’s a good sign.”
