TOKYO: Malaysia's number one mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying (pic) won their first-ever BWF Super Series title when they defeated Muhammad Rijal-Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia 21-12, 21-19 in the Japan Open badminton championships in Tokyo today.
The top seeded Malaysian pair were in fine form in the final as they overcame the fifth seeded Indonesians in only 32 minutes.
Meanwhile, Lee Chong Wei fended off the challenge from Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana to win the men's singles title.
The top seed, who won the title in 2007 and 2010, powered his way through to a 21-18, 21-18 victory over the Thai.
"It was really a good match, but it was tough," Chong Wei told AFP.
"This is my first tournament after the London Olympics. I'm very happy to start with this victory. I can put my disappointment behind me with this title," said Chong Wei, who lost to Lin Dan in the Olympics finals twice in a row.
Doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong failed to make it a trio of wins for Malaysia, going down to South Korea's Kim Ki-jung-Kim Sa-rang 21-16, 21-19 in 33 minutes.
