There is a saying in Malay that goes ‘Lembu dipegang pada talinya, manusia dipegang pada janjinya’. This saying, loosely translated means an animal is held by its rope while what holds a man is his promise. Even in all the major religion and any value system, a promise is a direct reflection of a person’s attitude and principles. If he takes his promises lightly, he is then deemed to be a person that can’t be trusted and is of low principle.
In terms personal growth, breaking and honoring promises is the corner stone to trust, integrity, confidence and a dozen other principles. Even in parenting, one of the princples most taught is honoring promises to the point that it is an insult to an individual when someone questions his integrity due to breaking of promises. In response, we will always say, I am a man of my word to indicate trust and integrity. Things go beyond comprehension when a leader goes back on his word. The consequence is dire. He is setting a very dangerous precedent that will not only jeopardize his credibility and survival but will also destroy the integrity of the organization. Such is the case with Ong Tee Keat. His reluctance to step down even after making a clear promise will spell his demise. It is now downhill for him. He will lose his seat in shame and MCA will need a long time to recover from such a shameful act. His trust, honesty, responsibility and integrity will be questioned if miraculously he wins and stays as president. MCA will suffer the same too. He had an opportunity to step down gracefully and with honor. Now all that awaits him whether he wins or lose is only shame and disgrace. Related News
