If You Can Afford It, Pay More Zakat

Datuk Mohd Tamyes Abd Wahid.Datuk Mohd Tamyes Abd Wahid.SHAH ALAM -- For those who can afford it, the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) endorses paying zakat fitrah based on the market price of rice, which is RM10 per kg multiplied by 2.6 per person.

To elucidate, Selangor mufti, Datuk Mohd Tamyes Abd Wahid said that if a person and his family members consumed this amount of the grain, the zakat per person would be RM26.

He cited a hadith recorded by Imam Al-Bukhari that mentioned a companion of Prophet Muhammad disclosing that they (people during his time) paid zakat according to what they consumed.

“Although LZS has decided that the levy for zakat fitrah this year is RM7 per person, fulfilling this fourth pillar of Islam as it was done in the olden days, is endorsed by Muslim theologians as ‘wajib’ (compulsory),” he said in a special interview, here, today.

Mohd Tamyes said those who need a better explanation on this recommendation could get in touch with LZS personnel or enquire with one of its representatives.

In a statement, LZS said 2,760 people had been appointed as assistant zakat collectors throughout Selangor for the fasting month, while zakat could also be paid at 27 LZS branches and selected supermarkets in the state any day in Ramadan.
