Stop Using Bugis Ethnic Issue To Campaign - PPBMI

JAKARTA -- The Bugis Youth Assembly of Macassar, Indonesia (PPBMI) hopes that politicians in Malaysia will not use the Bugis ethnic issue in campaigning to garner support or votes ahead of the 14th General Election (GE14).

PPBMI chairman Arwin Welhalmina said political parties in Malaysia should realise that using the issue in their campaign, would only have a detrimental effect on Malaysia-Indonesia relations.

“We hope the negative stigma following Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed’s speech on Bugis ethnicity does not happen again in order to ensure the continuity of good relations between the two countries.

“Ethnic elements should not be exploited on any political stage,” he said after paying a courtesy call on Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim here today.

PPBMI is a non-governmental organisation which has 11 branches with about 2,000 members from among  Bugis ethnic youths throughout Indonesia.

Dr Mahathir in his speech at a rally on Oct 14 last year said Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was descended from ‘Bugis pirates’.

Arwin had earlier urged Dr Mahathir to apologise and retract the statement.
