Penang Floods: Paddy Farmers Suffer RM15m In Losses

Pic: BernamaPic: BernamaBUKIT MERTAJAM: A total of 5,547 paddy farmers in Seberang Perai are looking at RM15 million in losses, as their paddy fields were destroyed during last weekend's storm, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

He said based on an early report by the Penang Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA)), 5,547 out of 6,090 farmers were affected.

Tajuddin added that 9,680.82 hectares of paddy fields were destroyed in the 12-hour storm during the weekend.

"The ministry will try our best to assist them to replant the paddy," he told reporters after officiating a ceremony to handover flood relief goods to the affected farmers at the Permatang Pauh Commercial Centre here yesterday.

Tajuddin said the ministry would not channel financial aid, but would provide assistance in the form of farming supplies like seeds, fertilizer and other items to help the farmers replant the paddy.

He also said that as of Tuesday, a total of 109 fruit farmers and 348 vegetable farmers in Seberang Perai have suffered losses due to the storm.

"For fishery, a total of 116 fish farm operators in the state suffered losses of about RM26,731,370, after their fish farms were hit by bad weather conditions.

"While a total of 40 livestock breeders involved in the breeding of poultry, cows, goats and pigs are estimated to have suffered losses totalling RM404, 500.
