4 Students Fall Ill From Mercury Spill At Kangar School Lab

KANGAR: Twelve pupils from SK Behor Mali here were rushed to the Simpang Empat Health Clinic following a mercury spill at the school’s lab this afternoon.

Four of the pupils, aged 11, were later rushed to the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in an ambulance after they complained of headache and vomiting.

The other students were allowed to return home.

State Health director Dr Zaini Hussin said the four victims were suffering secondary headaches due to exposure to the spilled mercury.

However, he said they are currently in stable condition at the hospital.

"The pupils are being observed at the hospital and will be discharged soon if their condition improves," he said when contacted.

Meanwhile, Perlis Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operation) Muhammad Firdaus Yusop said they received a distress call from the school management at 12.56pm.

"It took a team of four men about one hour to clean up the mercury spilled on the lab table.

"The operation was completed at 2.57pm," Firdaus said in a statement.
