Datuk Seri Ang Lai Soon said they can turn Earth Day into a day by doing something more productive that will reduce the pressure to the earth in their own small way.

"It is the day we show our support for environmental protection and conservation. By first and foremost considering how we can reduce our own footprint and that of our family and that of our group on the environment.

"By doing simple things such as reducing wastage of food, turning off unnecessary lights, planting our own herbs and vegetables in our gardens, using water carefully, to give just a few ideas," he said in his 2017 Earth Day message here today.

Ang, who is also the St John Ambulance Sarawak chairman and commander, urged the public to support at all levels of government representatives who pledge to legislate all necessary measures to stop further deterioration of the environment.

However he said, legislation on its own is not good enough unless there is effective enforcement .

Ang, who also named parties involved sterling work in the field of environmental protection namely World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and in Malaysia the WWF-Malaysia, urged the people to support the good work of WWF and other NGOs which are trying to make the planet a more bearable place to live in.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 worldwide. Various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day events in more than 193 countries are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.
