Malaysia Appointed Host of GMUN 2010 | Print |

PUTRAJAYA, 31 JULY, 2010: Malaysia has been selected as the host for the 2nd Global Model United Nations 2010 (GMUN 2010) assembly involving youths from United Nations (UN) member countries.

The first GMUN assembly which was held in Geneva, Switzerland in August last year saw the participation of 375 youths from 192 UN member countries.

Youth and Sports Ministry Under Secretary for International Division Azlina Fadzlon Mohd Amin said the selection of Malaysia as the new host for the assembly was announced by the UN Department of Public Information (DPI) Under-Secretary-General, Kiyota Akasaka, at the UN headquarters in New York, on Feb 4.

She said Kiyota was the man who mooted the idea for GMUN assembly based on the UN model assembly which he attended in Kyoto, Japan during his younger years.

In several UN member countries, UN model assembly was held in the form of simulation to give a clearer picture of the real proceedings of the UN General Assembly to the young generation.

Azlina Fadzlon said Malaysia was selected as host based on its success in organising youth programmes.

"We have close relationship with the Commonwealth Secretariat for youth programme in the Asian region. That is why when UN was looking for a host country for GMUN 2010, word spread through the Commonwealth Secretariat," she said.

Azlina Fadzlon said the GMUN assembly was aimed at increasing awareness among the youth on the roles played by the UN in the world arena.

She said the GMUN assembly was also a channel for the young generation to voice out their views, suggestions and alternative solutions to the issues discussed at the UN General Assembly.

At the end of the GMUN Assembly, a resolution would be passed to be tabled to the President of the UN General Assembly, she said.

Malaysia is expected to organise the GMUN Assembly in the middle of next month.
