Guan Eng: EC Should Discuss City Council Election with Penang Govt PDF Print

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 MARCH, 2010: Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng in response to the statement by the Election Commission (EC) Chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof said today that the EC should have a meeting with the State Government to discuss the mechanism to implement the election for members of the state’s city council.

"I think it (the meeting) is necessary before a decision is made. Let us meet to show that EC is an independent body and does not to favour any party," said Lim.

“If the decisions are made without reference to the state government, I think this decision does not reflect the accountability of the Federal Constitution,” he added.

“In conjunction with the Prime Minister’s statement that the election is a waste (of time), I would like to suggest that it to be conducted together with the General Election,” he added.

According to him, if the election were conducted together with the General Election, it won’t be such a waste as what Najib stated.

Abdul Aziz was reported to have announced today that the EC will decide about the City Council election next week.
