Liow Wants Feedback Before Deciding on Position PDF Print

PUTRAJAYA, 12 MARCH 2010: MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said today he will only make known which post he is contesting in the March 28 fresh party polls after seeking the views of members throughout the country.

"I want to listen to their views, then only I will make a decision. I will announce it when the time comes," he said.

Speaking to Bernama here as he kicked off his nationwide tour to obtain feedback, Liow, who is Health Minister, said what was more important was that the party members were assured that the party was moving forward and towards stability.

"People will not want to see the party leadership neglect the Oct 10 EGM's (extraordinary general meeting) decision. At least they know that we are moving ahead now," he said.

At the Oct 10 EGM or better known as triple 10 EGM, the MCA delegates made a dramatic decision to approve a vote of no confidence against party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and rejected Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek to be reinstated as deputy president.

Both Tee Keat and Dr Chua later forged a partnership under the "Greater Unity Plan", which was rejected by some leaders as the internal bickering continued.

Last week, Dr Chua, together with seven Central Committee (CC) members as well as the other 13 CC members aligned to Liow, resigned from their posts, prompting the party to hold fresh elections.

During the interview, Liow said he did not rule out the possibility of working with other party leaders to face the polls but stopped short of naming any party or group of people that he would be working with.

For the past few days, there had been intense speculation that he would team up with former party secretary-general, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan or even Dr Chua.

Liow said what was more important was that all party members should work together to ensure that the fresh polls run smoothly as the party needed to build its strength and recover from the internal bickering.

Nominations for the polls will be held on March 22.

Liow is meeting central delegates in Perlis, Kedah and Penang and Melaka tomorrow.

On Sunday, he is scheduled to meet the central delegates in Negeri Sembilan and is expected to make known his decision after that.
