Police Complete Investigation into Dragon Boat TragedyPolice PDF Print

PENANG, 8 FEB 2010: Penang police have completed the investigations into last month's Lebuh Macallum dragon boat tragedy which claimed the lives of six people, state police chief Datuk Ayub Yaakob said.

"We have forwarded the report to the relevant authority. It is understood that the report will be forwarded to the Attorney-General's Chambers," he told reporters here.

Ayub said police had suggested that an inquest be carried out to determine what really happened on the day of the incident on Jan 12.

He said police had recorded statements from 26 witnesses including rescuers, school management, organiser and the Education Department.

"The report is subject to further scrutiny of the prosecuting authority and we are ready to act on any directive to be issued," he said.

A teacher and five students of Sekolah Tinggi Chung Ling here were drowned after their dragon boat capsized and hit a tugboat in waters near Lebuh Macallum here.

They were among 18 rowers who were undergoing training in preparation for the Penang International Dragon Boat Race in July.

Twelve other students survived by swimming to the coast and rescued by nearby boats.
