Working Paper On Firefighters' Critical Allowance To Be Submitted To Cabinet - Zuraida

KUCHING -- The Housing and Local Government Ministry has prepared a working paper on the critical allowance scheme for fire and rescue personnel for the Cabinet’s approval, said its minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

She said the critical allowance scheme for firefighters had been raised since the administration of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government and resurfaced when the Pakatan Harapan (PH) took over the rein of the government.

Zuraida, however, said the government needed to take caution and adopt austerity approaches in its expenditure following the country’s weak financial position due to the burden of the national debt of over RM1 trillion.

She said the government wanted to stablise the country’s financial position but, at the same time, appreciate the duties and sacrifices of firefighters.

“The job of a firefighter is very noble because in the event of a fire or disaster, they are willing to risk their own lives solely to rescue lives or properties of others,” she said at the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Aidilfitri and Gawai ‘ngiling  bidai’ gathering here today.

As such, she urged all the department’s officers and personnel to continue serving the people regardless of race.

Zuraidi said during her meeting with Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sarawak Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian today, they had also discussed about the problem of fire outbreaks in longhouses.

Hence, she had directed the state fire and rescue department to hold discussions on how to resolve the incidents of fire in the longhouses, she said.
