Girl Dies Four Days After Getting Hit By Firecracker

JOHOR BAHRU –  A seven-year-old girl died last night, four days after being hit by a firecracker explosion in her grandfather's house compound in Felda Papan Timur, near Kota Tinggi, last Thursday.

The victim’s father, Muhammad Saad Yusuf, 43, said Nuraqira Khaeefa, 7, who was injured on the head by a firecracker splinter, died in Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) here at 8.45pm last night.

“The incident occurred at about 10pm on Thursday when Nuraqira Khaeefa was playing fireworks with several cousins in the house compound.   

“At that time, I was lying in house before I heard a loud explosion outside,” he said when contacted here today.

Muhammad Saad said his wife and a relative rushed to the spot and to find Nuraqira Khaeefa had fallen to the ground and was bleeding on the head.

He said Nuraqira who was the third of four siblings was later taken to a clinic and then to Kota Tinggi Hospital before being referred to HSA.  

He said Nuraqira who was unconscious since the incident took her last breath last night and doctors found her skull had serious fracture which caused bleeding.   

“I am not sure how it happened but it was learnt during the incident, there were several other children in other houses also playing firecrackers,” said Muhammad Saad who is an instructor at a driving school in Kota Masai here.

He said he had lodged a report at the Johor Bahru Sentral police station here yesterday while his daughter’s body was buried at Felda Papan Timur Muslim cemetery today.

Meanwhile Kota Tinggi police chief  Supt Ahsmon Bajah when contacted confirmed the incident.

Ahsmon said the case was now investigated under Section 304A of the Penal Code, Section 8 of the Explosive Substances Act 1958 and Section 33 of the Child Act.

“We are still investigating the actual cause of the incident. Members of the public who have information on the incident can contact acting CID chief ASP Azizul Hamsar Mohamad,” he said.
