A Ukrainian military pilot accused by Russia of shooting down a Malaysian Airlines plane in 2014 killed himself in his home Sunday, authorities said.

Vladyslav Voloshyn, 29, was in his Mykolaiv apartment when he fatally shot himself with a pistol that had no license number, Ukrainian police said.

His wife heard a gunshot coming from his room and then called the police. Medics arrived at the home and transported Voloshyn to a hospital where he later died, according to cops.

Police described his death as a “suicide,” but it’s being investigated under the “premeditated murder” section of the Ukrainian penal code, according to the BBC.

His family told authorities he was recently battling depression. The gun cops recovered is being examined.

Voloshyn was in charge of Mykolaiv airport after resigning from the air force. He used to fly combat missions against Russian-backed rebels and was considered a war hero in Ukraine, the BBC reported.

Russia alleged Voloshyn was involved in the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 on July 17, 2014 — an accusation he called a lie.
