Jusuf Kalla Offended By Statement Labelling The Buginese As Pirates

ISTANBUL: Indonesian vice president Jusuf Kalla said he felt offended by a statement made by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who labelled the Buginese as pirates.

Jusuf expressed this in an unofficial discussion with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi during the Organisation for Economic Cooperation (D-8) summit here yesterday.

Ahmad Zahid said, Jusuf, a Buginese, said he felt upset because the statement was an outright insult to the community whether they are in Malaysia or in Indonesia.

“Its the colonialists who labelled the Buginese as pirates. They were actually warriors who were against the colonialists.

“I do not wish to say more but many were affected by the insult because it appears to undermine those of the Buginese ancestry who were historically warriors of the archipelago,” he said.

Dr Mahathir in a recent Pakatan Harapan-led gathering in Padang Jawa, Petaling Jaya described Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak as a lost Buginese pirate in Malaysia.

The statement had offended the community in Malaysia as well as Indonesia, many of whom called for the former Prime Minister to apologise.

Ahmad Zahid who is also Home Minister said police had also received reports from individuals and organisations on the issue.
