CYBERJAYA: A warrant of arrest has been issued against a young actress who failed to show up at the Shah Alam magistrate’s court when her case on income tax offences came up for mention on April 12.
In a statement here today, the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) said the 23-year-old had allegedly failed to file her tax returns for the assessment years of 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
She faces five counts of failing to comply with a notice under Section 78 (a) of the Income Tax Act 1967.
"A summons was handed over to the accused on April 11, requiring the accused to attend the session on April 12 for the mention of the case at the magistrate’s court in Shah Alam – but the accused and her attorney failed to appear," the statement said.
She had also allegedly failed to present herself for questioning by the IRB at their offices on the matter.
The actress therefore failed to comply with the notice under Section 81 of the Income Tax Act 1967, which requires that she submit information orally to the IRB.
IRB lawyer, Nurulsheeda Mohd Yahaya, applied for an order of arrest to be issued against the accused, which was authorised by magistrate Sarulatha Paramavathar.
"Failure to comply with the above notices is an offence under Section 120 (1) (a) of the Income Tax Act 1967. It carries a fine of no less than RM200 and no more than RM20,000, or imprisonment not exceeding six months or both, on conviction,” it said.
The statement added that the court has set May 24 for re-mention of the case.
