Malaysian Economy Likely To Continue Expanding Next 4-6 Months

KUALA LUMPUR: The economy is expected to continue expanding in the next four to six months, with the annual change of Leading Index (LI) increasing 0.8 per cent in February this year, says the Statistics Department.

In a statement, the department said the annual change of LI, which monitored the economic performance in advance, increased 0.5 per cent in January 2017.

"However, the monthly change of LI registered a decrease of 0.9 per cent in the reference month, due to the number of new companies registered (-1.0 per cent) and expected sales value in the manufacturing sector (-0.8 per cent)," it said.

Meanwhile, the Coincident Index (CI), which measured the current economic activity, rose 1.3 per cent in February 2017, attributed to the capacity utilisation in the manufacturing sector (0.6 per cent) and volume index of retail trade (0.3 per cent).

The annual change of LI and CI showed an improvement in February 2017 compared with the previous month and concurrently, the level of both Diffusion Indices remained above 50 per cent, indicating that the economy would continue expanding four to six months, ahead.
