The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) are no strangers when it comes to shocking and sometimes questionable demonstrations to raise awareness against animal cruelty, and this time, they released footage of the cruel treatment of puppies in puppy mills in China.

The footage was taken by Peta Asia investigators when they visited puppy mills across China and what they saw was truly heart-breaking as the dogs did not have reason to celebrate the upcoming Year of the Dog.

Dogs at the mills were kept in filthy cages that were barely larger than their bodies, many were malnourished and due to being constantly caged and not getting any exercise, many of them end up going insane.

Many of the dogs are in bad physical condition too as signs of hip dysplasia, which is caused by inbreeding, can be seen present among the dogs such as the white bulldog that was seen dragging its hind legs because of the condition.

It was reported that Peta Asia has appealed to China’s Ministry of Agriculture through a letter to stop the abuse of dogs in puppy mills but have not received a response.

“Cruel puppy mills see dogs as nothing more than breeding machines.

“This Year of the Dog, Peta is calling on everyone to remember these imprisoned dogs’ cries and pledge never to buy an animal from a pet store or a breeder,” Peta vice-president Jason Baker said, as reported by South China Morning Post.

As these puppy mills continue to strive due to demand for purebred dogs, Peta has urged people to adopt dogs from shelters instead of buying them from puppy mills, pet stores and breeders.

“If you have the time, money, and patience to care for a companion animal properly, adopt, don’t shop, and be sure to have your animal spayed or neutered,” Peta Asia wrote.
