PUTRAJAYA -- The fate that had befallen former Berita Harian reporter Tajuddin Saman, who is now bedridden after a stroke eight years ago, has captured the attention of premier Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The prime minister, through his press secretary Datuk Akmar Hisham Mokhles, today presented a personal donation to Tajuddin at his home in Precinct 9, here.

The 70-year-old Tajuddin, who is unable to communicate, was seen touched and lifted his left hand as soon as he saw Akmar Hisham and several of his former colleagues and other media practitioners.

Akmar Hisham said the donation was hoped to alleviate the financial burden faced by Tajuddin’s family as he was constantly in need of intensive care and treatment, which were quite costly.

“This is especially to buy the special milk needed for his daily consumption, as well as the disposable adult diapers,” he said, adding that donations from press secretaries of Cabinet ministers were also presented to the ailing ex-reporter during the visit.

Meanwhile, Tajuddin’s wife, Rahmah Ibrahim, 61, said her husband was still able to remember his friends despite having been bedridden since 2012.

She said the donation would mostly be used to purchase the special milk for her husband’s consumption, which cost RM70 a tin.

“Usually, a tin of milk can last for a week, but the nutrition expert has advised us to increase the volume, so a tin will only last five days now.

“We also received milk supply and diapers from Baitulmal, but we still have to purchase the medicines he needed,” Rahmah said.

Tajuddin had served at Berita Harian for 20 years from 1975 to 1995 and had even received the Kajai Award, the nations’s top journalism award, in 1990.

He had also served as the press secretary to former Kedah Menteri Besar Tan Sri Osman Arof, former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Abdul Hamid Zainal Abidin,  and former Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid.

Tajuddin had also authored the book “Dari Kodiang ke Jalan Riong” based on his experience in the journalism industry.
