According to historical accounts, it was a city filled with decadence, wine, and luxury.

Baiae, was once the resort of choice for the super-rich from the ancient Roman Empire and became notorious for its decadent luxury.

History books describe a city filled with sprawling mansions built by emperors and elites who headed for this seaside city to lap up the Mediterranean sun and splash their wealth.

Encyclopedia Britannica describes a beautiful town with cobbled streets, mosaics, statues, spas, and even the luxurious villas of Julius Caesar and Emperor Nero. It was also home to numerous grand temples dedicated to the Greek mythological gods, Mercury, Venus, and Diana.

Lost for centuries after it was claimed by the ocean, it remained hidden beneath the waves of the Gulf of Naples.

However in 2014, heavy floods inundated this region of Naples, causing a series of landslides to expose portions of the old Roman walls of this ancient Roman city but the rest of Baiae remained elusive and mysterious until now.

Italian photographer Antonio Busiello, who lives in Naples, managed to locate the site and photographed roads, walls, mosaics and even statues that have brought this legendary city of the Caesars back to life.

“Diving here is like a dive into history, looking at ancient Roman ruins underwater is something hard to describe, a beautiful experience indeed,” Busiello told UK news daily Mirror.

“The beautiful mosaics, and the villas and temples that have reemerged or are still underwater show the opulence and wealth of this area."
