M’sians Voice Dissent Against Trump Declaring Jerusalem As Capital Of Israel

“Today we finally acknowledge the obvious: that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital,” were the words uttered by Donald Trump that sent shockwave within the global Muslim community.

“Israel is a sovereign nation with the right like any other sovereign nation to determine its own capital,” Trump said, as reported by the New York Times, after he conveyed that he will move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

“Acknowledging this is a fact is a necessary condition for achieving peace.”

The announcement made by the President of the United States (POTUS), which threatens to spark massive unrest across the Muslim world and potential violent outbreak, was not well-received by all walks of life throughout the globe.

“President Abbas warned of the dangerous consequences such a decision would have to the peace process and to the peace, security and stability of the region and of the world,” the Palestinian president's spokesperson, Nabil Abu Rudeina, relayed to Wafa.

Al Jazeera also reported that a statement issued by the Jordanian royal house stated that King Abdullah has warned Trump of the “dangerous repercussions on the stability and security of the region” in the event he proceeds with his decision.

While plenty of Arab and European leaders as well as the United Nations have vehemently and vocally opposed the volatile declaration, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has strongly stressed that Malaysia rejects Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“I, as the president of UMNO and the Prime Minister of Malaysia, would like to invite all party leaders, and others who are present in this hall or who are outside, to stand up,” he urged, as quoted in The Star.

“We must voice our stand clearly so that the world listens to the voice of the Muslims in Malaysia, that we reject forever and in the harshest terms the suggestion to make Baitul Maqdis (Jerusalem) as the capital of Israel.”

Echoing the same sentiment, Malaysians have quickly flooded social media – expressing their immense dissatisfaction laced with fury over the nightmarish ordeal.

As a matter of fact, Malaysian Digest has decided to ask a few random Malaysians regarding Trump’s controversial move, and here’s what our fellow countrymen have to say:

“The move was expected the moment Donald Trump was sworn in as the POTUS,” Rifqi opined, yet professed that he did foster hope that Trump would have a change of heart.

“It was never a secret that the orange fella is anti-Muslim – it was depicted throughout his presidential campaign – but the fact that he officially announced his support for Israel just spells an impending doom for the world.”

Meanwhile, 33-year-old Nora shared that she is emotionally devastated by the announcement and pointed out that “Trump just reaffirmed the fact that United States have always supported Israel,” and questioned why in the first place, was the United States selected as the neutral party to handle the peace between Palestine and Israel.

Izyan, 24, on the other hand quipped that she worries that the move will spark a violent outbreak against religions as she clarified that Jerusalem is seen as a sacred ground for three religions; for the Muslims, Christians and Jews.

19-year-old Qistina asked for the Arab nations and the Muslim countries to join forces and stand against the move declared by Trump, as she believes that, “If the Muslim world stand united and shout their anguish, I do believe the US will be threatened.”

Pointing out that Islam is the fastest growing religion and is the second largest religion in the world, the young lass residing in the United States stressed that the “most powerful country in the world,” will be infinitesimal when compared to the united voices of the Muslim world.

“As a Muslim, it sincerely breaks my heart to know that Trump basically waged war with the Muslims,” Meor Rahman lamented.

“Masjid Al-Aqsa is an important holy site in Islam because before prayers were led in the direction of the Kaaba, Al-Aqsa served as the Qibla (direction for Muslim prayers).”

As reported by Al Jazeera, Masjid Al-Aqsa is significant in Islam as Muslims believe that the Prophet Muhammad was transported from the Scared Mosque in Mecca to Al-Aqsa during Isra and Mi'raj (the Night Journey), before to heaven.

To emphasise just how important the holy site is to Muslims, Masjid Al-Aqsa was mentioned in the Quran in surah Isra (17:1)

“Glorified be He [Allah] Who did take His servant for a journey by night from Al Masjid Al Haram to Al Masjid Al Aqsa, whose precincts We did bless, in order that We might show him some of our Signs. Verily He is the All Hearing, All Seeing.”

“Sejahtera Bersama Islam” ABDUL HADI AWANG Presiden PAS Bertarikh : 18 Rabiul Awal 1439 / 7 Disember 2017 #savealquds #soladiriti #prayforpalestine #prayforIslam #SejahterBersamaIslam #islampenyelamat #bangkitbersama

With a number of countries similarly voicing their disapproval, an Ustaz who resides in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, pointed out that the disheartening reality ought to serve as a lesson for the Muslim world.

“For years Muslim countries have attempted to find a solution to free Palestine from their unfortunate predicament, yet to no avail.

“Perhaps, as heartbreaking as it is, the decision made by Donald Trump is a wake-up call to all Muslim leaders that they should gather together and re-evaluate their strategy in freeing Palestine, maintaining peace between Palestine and Israel without losing Jerusalem,” he suggested.

With Jerusalem holding immense significance to Islam, we hope Muslims globally will all come together and stand against Jerusalem being named as the capital of Israel.
