A senior citizen had to use an umbrella inside her dilapidated house every time it rained for the past six months due to a leaked roof.

Kamariah Yusof, 75, who lives alone in the more than 60-year-old ancestral home located in Kampung Sungai Dua Besar, Kuala Pilah, had no other choice than to weather the rain and freezing cold if it rained heavily, Harian Metro reports.

According to her, she is more comfortable living alone because her children live elsewhere with their own families.

“Every time it rains, there is no place for me to take cover and I have to use an umbrella inside my house. I have stayed with my children several times but I am more comfortable living in my own home because I get to see my friends.

“It was my own decision to live alone here and not anyone else’s,” she said when she was met by the National Service Volunteer Brigade (BSKN) who came to her house yesterday for a community service program.

60 volunteers consisting of former National Service (PLKN) trainers, Department of Social Welfare, National Antidrug Agency, Baitulmal, District Religious Office and locals came together to help out in the program.

Khidir Mansor, a volunteer, said that his party received complaints from the locals since a month ago about a senior citizen who lives alone in a lacking environment.

“We found that the house was at a risk of collapse due to its age and can pose danger to the inhabitant.

“Following that, we have discussed with the Kuala Pilah District Office to organise a community service program together with several other agencies through the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) by changing the roof, cleaning the house compound as well as its interior, and fixing small damages,” he said.
