HSR A Transformational Investment, Says US Engineering Firm

KUALA LUMPUR -- High-speed Rail (HSR) is a transformational investment, acting as a catalyst for commercial and economic development, a US-based engineering firm representative said.

CH2M Hill Companies Ltd Global Practice Lead for Transport Economic Jon Clyne said while each HSR project has different objectives such as job creation and speed of travel, in all cases, it provides a powerful motor for economic benefits.

"We have seen this happening, particularly in regions where there is an extensive HSR network in place," he said at the fourth International Summit of the HSR Asia 2017 here today.

Clyne, a panellist at the summit, said the underlying and type of benefits depended on existing travel market and economic potential for each project.

He added that HSR was also a higher level of solution for traffic congestion problem, as well as a game changer that would raise the economic profile of a country.

The two-day summit, which began today, deliberates on the challenges and opportunities in high-speed rail and rail construction in Asia based on the success of other countries.
